THANK YOU, HAVERIM, for your support of the CBH 50th ANNIVERSARY GALA PARTY!
On Sunday night we welcomed more than 260 CBH partners, friends & family to the Bet Haverim Redwood Grove! What a wonderful memory was made as we celebrated our milestone, honored Candace Naliboff with the Founders’ Spirit Award & raised funds to support our community via a fun & entertaining auction. Many thanks to the minyans of volunteers who made this evening not only possible, but so special. If you would like a copy of the Commemorative Booklet from the event, you may pick one up in the CBH office.
As many of you already have inquired, an announcement will be made as soon as possible regarding net profit from the event…hopefully by week’s end. If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact 50th Gala Party chair Jodi Liederman at jliederman@cs.com or 916-730-3413, or 50th Anniversary/Tree of Life chair Joy Cohan at joycohan1@gmail.com or 383-1814.

The Jubilee Lifelong Learning Series continues THIS THURS. May 24 with Dr. Aziza Khazzoom on “Wither ethnic difference? Similarities in the Immigration Experiences of Polish and Iraqi Olim of the 1950s”
The presentation will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Social Hall. Dr. Khazzoom is an Israeli sociologist currently serving as the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Visiting Israeli Professor for the 2012 academic year at UC Davis.

Shavuot: Celebrating The Light of Torah
These are days of anticipation as we count up from our freedom at Passover to the moment when we were given the Torah on Mount Sinai, marked by the holiday of Shavuot. The Torah bids us count 49days, seven weeks, from liberation to revelation, whose culmination we celebrate on the 50th day with the holiday of Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks. This year Shavuot will be observed on Sunday evening, May 27th. We hope you will join us for one of the many ways we will be celebrating our ongoing relationship with Torah.
Saturday, May 26, 9-11 PM, Social Hall
Leil Tikkun Shavuot
On the eve of Shavuot, May 26th, we will gather from 9-11 PM in the Social Hall as we prepare to hear the words of Torah in fresh new ways. We will have two study sessions and a delicious dairy oneg, which celebrates how Torah is like mothers’ milk that nourishes our spirits. This is always a wonderful opportunity for learning and sharing!
Sunday, May 27, 5:20 AM @ the Yolo Bypass West Levee
Kol HaNefesh: Shavuot Revelations Ritual
As the sun rises on the first day of Shavuot, we greet the dawn and the first light of Torah with anticipation. You are invited to bring your favorite verse of Torah to share with everyone and a thought about why it is meaningful to you. The revelations of Shavuot are unique, often providing insight and meaning in response to the presence of difficult times, suffering or challenges that have taken place within our lives. Building upon that possibility, we will gather and invite our own kavanah (intentions), shared prayers, and witness the rising of the sun.
The west levee is the place we often see local fraternities and sororities write their Greek letters in stones, as we drive by on Highway 80. From 80 East, take exit 78 (at the Yolo Fruitstand). Turn left and park up on the levee.

Kabbalat Torah Celebration
This year, Congregation Bet Haverim is proud to announce the Confirmation class of 5772! This dedicated group of young people will celebrate their completion of our formal religious school program with a ceremony called “Kabbalat Torah,” which means “Receiving the Torah,” at a special Shavuot service Sunday, May 27th at 7:00 pm. Shavuot commemorates the giving of the Torah. The Torah was given only once, our tradition teaches, but each of us in every generation must stake a personal claim in our heritage. This special ceremony offers our confirmands a personal opportunity to claim their Judaism, and the Torah, for themselves. We hope that the entire congregation will come out to celebrate the commitment of these wonderful young leaders in our congregation. This will be a joyous event as our young people participate in leading the service and share their insights about the meaning of being Jewish for each of them. Mazel Tov to all our Confirmands:
* Timmy Brown * Ilana Creinin * Daryn Kuhlman *
* Avery Lascher-Posner * Daniel Pardee *
* Ary Spilkin * Lily Whithaus *
Friends, family and community members might consider making a donation in honor of our students to our Israel Trip Fund, Campership Fund or one of the Youth funds.
A special dessert oneg will be held following services to honor our Confirmands.

Yizkor Services for Shavuot
The traditional Yizkor service recited at the conclusion of Shavuot will be held this year, appropriately enough, on Monday, May 28th, which is Memorial Day, beginning at 9:00 AM. Four times a year, our tradition bids us gather at a special service to remember loved ones who are no longer living. Please join us at this time-honored service to gather with our community to pay tribute to those who have left a lasting mark on our lives.

Two Separate Events with Rabbi Shawn Zevit

Sacred Leadership with Rabbi Shawn Zevit
Everyone is invited to a thought provoking conversation on Sacred Leadership led by Rabbi Shawn Zevit on Thursday, May 31, 2012 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. in the Social Hall. Our 50th year celebration invites us to look back at all we’ve accomplished and to contemplate the endless possibilities for our collective future. We will explore leadership in a spiritual context through text study, spiritual teachings, and a review of historic and current leadership models. In so doing, we will discover the individual ways in which each of us might help lead our congregation forward, and the manner and direction in which we want our congregation led. The evening will include small group break-out sessions and a question and answer period to address your concerns.
Rabbi Shawn Zevit has over 25 years experience in spiritual leadership, organizational consulting and training, educational arts, writing, recording, teaching and performing. He has consulted with over 500 institutions and faith communities across North America, and has taught Interpersonal and Organizational Communications at the University of Toronto and Temple University. Since 1998 he has been the Director of Congregational Services and Tikkun Olam for the North American Reconstructionist Movement.

Hello, my name is Max Brumer and throughout high school Congregation Bet Haverim has been an important part of my life. I have tried to be a part of this community we all share. I am currently president of CBH’s youth group, DRTY, Davis Reform Temple Youth. As president one thing I have encouraged is expanding DRTY events to include other youth groups from around the Sacramento area, creating larger events and giving people an opportunity to create even more lasting Jewish friends. Prior to being president I served as treasurer for two consecutive years. I have also served as a madrichim in 6th and 7th grade classes for the past four years, hoping to make Sunday School an enjoyable time to learn about Judaism and create bonds and a sense of Jewish identity. Lastly, I am currently in charge of the Jew-Crew, a teen lead group that helps set up, clean up, and serve during Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. It truly has been a pleasure being a part of this community. Being a high school senior it saddens me to have to leave. However, I know that I must leave at some point, and that is why I have chosen to move to Israel for nine months to study and volunteer while still expanding my Jewish identity. I am going with a program called Aardvark Israel, a fairly new program that allows people aged 17-22, to take a gap year after high school and to live in Israel. The program does try to minimize the cost as much as possible, but it will still require me to take out a loan of about $20,000. However, the program does allow for friends and family to make donations to help sponsor students. Every little bit helps and I would truly appreciate any donation you would like to give me. If you would like to make a donation you can go to www.AardvarkIsrael.com/payoneer/payments. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to call me at (530) 848-6645 or email me at mxbrumer@gmail.com.
Thank you,
-Max
